An Italic word is a word slightly slanted right in a sentence or phrase. 

When something slanted right among a group of regular style words, it takes your attention easily. i.e., the italic style stands for catching a reader’s attention quickly. 

A document always contains some words or phrase in italic style. Let’s check what are the common circumstances where you can apply Italic.

To apply italic formatting while you are in Word, select the text for which you want to apply this formatting and press Ctrl + I.

Italic Styles

Woodrow Wilson is the only US president buried in Washington, DC. Here, only is slanted right to get special attention.

Barak Obama is the first African American president of the United States. Here the word first is slanted right to give importance to that.

Foreign words - When you are writing a sentence in English and want to put a foreign word. Example : I’ve got only 10 minutes for lunch, so I’ll stop at a cafe for a quick sandwich. Understand that café is a French word.

Do Not

  • Do not completely italicize part of a book. Example: a chapter in a book.
  • Do not italicize religious books – Qur-an, Bible, Torah.
  • Do not use italic & underline at the same time – He is the only one escaped.

the Small Letter i Has a Ball on the Top of It.

The small letter i itself contain a ball on the top of it. When the Ctrl key / hand hit it, this ball drops on italics one by one. Finally the word italics changes from regular formatting style into italic formatting.
