To beautify your word file, think about how to make the contents beautiful. When you want to beautify the content, consider the fonts first.

Word Shortcut keys Ctrl + D helps you to chose a font style for your file. 

Select the text and press Ctrl + [ to apply decrease font size by one point command while you are in Word

Before we go for how to memorize this particular keyboard shortcut, let's have some basic knowledge about few different fonts.

Serif & Sans Serif Fonts

There are two  main kinds of fonts. Serif & Sans Serif. Serif means with small lines. Sans means no lines. Sans Serif means no Serifs - no lines.

Serif and Sans Serif Fonts Difference

Serif fonts are different  with clear small strokes at the beginning and at the end of the letters.

Serif fonts flow one by one easier on the eyes. This is why it is very good for reading on a printed paper. Almost all books and newspapers use serif fonts.

Bookman Old Style, Georgia, Century are some of the widely used Serif fonts.

Sans Serif fonts are just opposite to that. No lines at the beginning or at the end.They are with clean lines and sharp edges.

This feature helps the reader to read Sans Serif on web easily. Its readability on the screen is much better than Serif fonts. Sans Serif fonts are modern fonts.

Arial, Helvetica and Vardana are some of the most commonly used Sans Serif fonts.

The general understanding is that Sans Serif fonts are good for web reading and serif fonts are good for printing. But this view is not agreed by all.

Open Sans font is designed by American typeface designer Steve Matteson.

Mono-space Font

Each letter in a Mono-space font takes the same area of horizontal space. For example the letters in the word love takes the same horizontal space irrespective of the width or height.

In Mono-Spacing each letter take equal wide space

Courier and Courier new are examples for Mono-space fonts. The example you see here is in courier new font format.

They are also called fixed-width fonts. Mono-space fonts are used in programming languages. Because it has got some features very important for programming. See the points below.

  • Punctuation characters are bigger and clear
  • 1 and I, I and | features are very plain and there is no confusion among them 
  • 0 and O are very see-through and there is no doubt between them.

Display Fonts

Display fonts are used for headings and not for body text. They are not suitable for body text because they are not in uniform size. Display fonts are in bigger size and please you when you look at it.

Hand Written Fonts

These are used for print layouts. Social media artwork,
